Assamese Culture, Culture in Assam

Assam is a glorious mixture of several races, languages, castes, socio-economic groups, tribes, semi-tribes and other ethnic groups. The rich blend of traditions different faiths, beliefs, religions, and lifestyles of people form the Huge Assamese Culture. The people of Assam celebrate several festivals, dance forms, music and is proud of its art and crafts, rich cuisines, languages, cultural establishments and elements. The people of Assam by and large have been able to conserve the old heritage and tradition of the land. The cultural blending in, the liberal intermingling of different groups of people, the harmonious nature of the people have made it possible that so many elements can stay under one roof in this state. This can happen only in Assam.

Assam represents the north-eastern part of the Indian sub-continent. It is seen as the gateway to the seven states of the north-east India. The Assamese Culture is not something which is a product of overnight exposure. The intermixing of different kinds of faith and tradition took place almost more than a thousand years ago. The dynasties that lives at that era, the Asiatic and Tibeto Burman folks were the original holders of their personal traditions which eventually resulted in the formation of the rich Assamese Culture as we can see currently.

In the 12th and 13th Century, the Tai Shans came to Assam under the able leadership of Su-ka-pha and that changed the entire face of the Culture, tradition and the geographical entity of Assam. The Tai people mixed up and embraced the local lifestyle and tradition and they adopted and united various forms of beliefs. traditions and culture which can be said to be the first glimpse of the present culture of Assam.

Fun Time: Indian Jokes

One day Mr. Singh and his family came to visit Mr. Kukreja and his family.
Once after dinner was served, the kids became busy among themselves playing various sorts of games and peek-a-boo.

Tina, four years old (who was the only daughter of Mr Singh) became quite fond of Rahul, five years old who was also incidentally the only son of the Kukrejas. Eventually, they went to the bedroom, tucked themselves under the blanket and started talking.

Tina, a bit curious by nature, asked Rahul: - Are you a boy or a girl?
Rahul was a bit perplexed at this sudden throw of question by Tina.

He replied: - I have no idea, can you please decipher?
Tina said: - For that I will have to do under the blanket again and check down on us.

There she went, checked something and came out in a minute.

Tina: - You are a boy and I am a girl.
Rahul: - How do you know that?
Tina: - It is quite simple actually. You are wearing black socks and I am wearing pink. Well, that solves it out, isn't it?

Fun Time: Assamese Jokes

One day, Mr Gogoi was coming back to his residence after a grand celebration of the Independence Day at one of his friend's place. The path was dark and edgy. Under the effect of alcohol he suddenly tripped on a stone and fell-down at the middle of the road.

Before he could even utter 'ouch' there was a flash at the cloudy sky above him. (Rainy days, you see!)
He was so damn annoyed that he looked up at the sky from where he had fallen and started screaming: "Wah God! This is such injustice. First, you trip me to the ground... and then u take my photo to post it on Facebook, huh?"

JATINGA, Assam: Birds' Suicide

JATINGA, ASSAM
Jatinga is a famous well-forested valley which is located in North Cachar Hill. This place is located at a distance of 9-10 KM from Halflong and almost 330 KM from Guwahati.

It is famous for its orange orchards and almost legendary for the phenomenal “bird suicide” that take place here. The mystery of Jatinga is yet to be unveiled till date and attracts ornithologists and spectators from all over the world. On foggy & moonless nights, thousands of migratory birds die or as people say, commit suicide, between 7 pm and 10 pm. This amazing phenomenon is not restricted to a particular species of birds and almost all kinds of migratory birds, like the Kingfisher, Tiger Bittern, and Little Egret, embrace this mysterious death.

However, there are a few other conditions which are also necessary for the phenomenon to occur.  Since the air is foggy, misty or rainy, the birds in general tend to come near the lights generated by the fire, and hence die from it.

Jiah Khan's Suicide Letter

Suraj Pancholi, is being taken away
This letter was addressed to Suraj Pancholi, Jiah Khan's love interest.  This Suicide Note clearly reveals how deep the trauma was which she had to go through:

"I don't know how to say this to you but I might as well now as I have nothing to lose. I've already lost everything. If you're reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside. You may not have known this but you affected me deeply to a point where I lost myself in loving you. Yet you tortured me everyday. These days I see no light I wake up not wanting to wake up. There was a time I saw my life with you, a future with you. But you shattered my dreams. I feel dead inside. I've never given so much of myself to someone or cared so much. You returned my love with cheating and lies. It didn't matter how many gifts I gave you or how beautiful I looked for you. I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave myself completely the pain you have caused me everyday has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul. I can't eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything. The career is not even worth it anymore.

When I first met you I was driven, ambitious and disciplined. Then I fell for you, a love I thought would bring out the best in me. I don't know why destiny brought us together. After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn't deserve this. I didn't see any love or commitment from you. I just became increasingly scared that you would hurt me mentally or physically. Your life was about partying and women. Mine was you and my work. If I stay here I will crave you and miss you. So I am kissing my 10-year career and dreams goodbye. I never told you but I received a message about you. About you cheating on me. I chose to ignore it, decided to trust you. You embarrassed me. I never went out, I never went with anyone else. I am a loyal person. I never met anyone with Karthik I just wanted you to feel how you make me feel constantly. No other woman will give you as much as I did or love you as much as I did. I can write that in my blood. Things were looking up for me here, but is it worth it when you constantly feel the pain of heartbreak when the person you love wants to abuse you or threatens to hit you or cheats on you telling other girls they are beautiful or throws you out of their house when you have no where to go and you've come to them out of love or when they lie to your face or they make you chase after them in their car. Or disrespects their family. You never even met my sister. I bought your sister presents. You tore my soul. I have no reason to breathe anymore. All I wanted was love. I did everything for you. I was working for us. But you were never my partner. My future is destroyed my happiness snatched away from me. I always wished the best for you, was ready to invest what little money I had in your betterment. You never appreciated my love, Kicked me in the face. I have no confidence or self esteem left, whatever talent whatever ambition you took it all away. You destroyed my life. It hurt me so much that I waited for you for ten days and you didn't bother buying me something.

The Goa trip was my birthday present but even after you cheated I still spent on you. I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You destroyed my Christmas and my birthday dinner when I came back. When I tried my hardest to make your birthday special. You chose to be away from me on Valentines Day. You promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged. All you want in life is partying, your women and your selfish motives. All I wanted was you and my happiness you took both away from me. I spent money on you selflessly you would throw in my face. When I would cry for you. I have nothing left in this world to live for after this. I wish you had loved me like I loved you. I dreamt of our future. I dreamt of our success. I leave this place with nothing but broken dreams and empty promises. All I want now is to go to sleep and never wake up again. I am nothing. I had everything. I felt so alone even while with you. You made me feel alone and vulnerable. I am so much more than this."

About Assam: History & other facts

The Legend behind the Name ASSAM:

The word 'Assam' as explained by some philosophers and scholars has come from the Sanskrit word Asoma which means to be peerless or unparalleled. But it is now accepted by most of the academic circles today that this term has come from the original name of Ahoms, who had ruled the land almost six hundred years prior to its taking over by the British. The  various races like Mongolian, Austric, Dravidian and Aryan that came to this land long-long ago have contributed to its colorful culture. Hence, Assam has a rich legacy of history, culture, art and civilization.

Assam was coined as Pragjyotisha or the place of eastern astronomy during the older period and later was named as the Kamrupa. The earliest epigraphic reference to this kingdom of Kamrupa can be found in the Allahabad pillar inscription during the rule of king Samudragupta. Kamrupa has been mentioned as a Pratyanta or a frontier state outside the Gupta empire but with a very friendly and subordinate relation to it. Hiuen Sang, the Chinese scholar pilgrim who had visited Kamrupa in about 743 AD on an invitation of its monarch, Kumar Bhaskar Varman, left a record about the kingdom he called the Kamolupa. Kamrupa also figured in the writings of the Arabian historian Alberuni in the eleventh century. Thus, from the epic period down to the twelfth century AD, the eastern frontier kingdom was known as Pragjyotisha and Kamrupa and kings called themselves 'Lords of Pragjyotisha'.

The rise and entry of the Ahoms across the eastern hills during the 1228 AD was the turning point in the history of Assam. They had ruled Assam almost for six centuries. The Burmese entered through the eastern borders and overran the territory at a time when court intrigues and dissensions were sapping the vitality of the Ahom royalty. It became a British protectorate in 1826 when the Burmese ceded Assam to the British under the provision of the Treaty of Yandabo.

The state boasts of great cultural heritage, which has hues of various civilizations, yet has managed to maintain its own identity. The chronological account reveals that the region has been existent from thousands of years and has been invaded several times by various dynasties. Assam boasts of rich vegetation, forests and wildlife; it also has numerous reserve forests including the renowned Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. Its biodiversity is acclaimed to be amongst the very few in the world.

Assam is the sentinel of North-East India and also the gateway to the North-Eastern States. The State is close to India's international borders with countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Assam is surrounded by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh on the north, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh on the east and Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram on the south.
